Marianas Trench
In early 2012, OBSIP supported an experiment that deployed both broadband and short period ocean-bottom seismometers in an area located along the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean to image and explore the relationships between serpentinization and seismicity in a subduction zone. The R/V Langseth was employed to shoot airguns over the short period OBS array of the active seismic portion of the experiment.
Chile 2012
OBSIP recently completed the deployment of 10 broadband ocean bottom seismometers off the coast of Chile. These instruments will be used by Principal Investigator Anne Trehu to study the post-seismic response updip of the February 27, 2010 Chilean megathrust earthquake.
The Cascadia Initiative
OBSIP is staying busy this summer and fall supporting up to seven cruises for the recovery and redeployment of 60 Cascadia OBS instruments. The Cascadia Amphibious Array is part of the larger Cascadia Initiative - a community experiment enabled with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds to study the structure of the Cascadia subduction zone.
The Ocean Bottom Seismograph Instrument Pool (OBSIP)
The U.S. National Ocean Bottom Seismograph Instrument Pool provides instrumentation to support research to further our understanding of marine geology, seismology and geodynamics. Funded through the NSF, the Pool makes ocean bottom seismic equipment available to all interested researches, to private and public organizations, and to industry.
