The long period instruments available through the OBSIP feature a 4-component system designed for high fidelity recording of ocean bottom seismic energy over an extended duration deployment. The general characteristics of these instruments include:
The 3-component broadband sensor (vertical and 2 horizontal) and pressure gauge are ideal for experiments utilizing earthquakes as sources to study structure of the upper mantle and oceanic crust. These instruments are capable of a >12 month deployment with continuous recording. LDEO, SIO and WHOI all maintain wide-band instruments in the OBSIP, each of which feature comparable characteristics and capabilities.
